Norabelle: No Providence / I’ll be right by your side

22 Apr

Last year, Louths favourite Slowcore band ‘Norabelle’ released their lovely little debut album ‘Wren’, which was well received by critics both home and abroad.

Last weekend, they let me film them performing a new track they have been working on called ‘No Providence / I’ll be right by your side’.

Filmed in front of a very hot fire in the middle of virtually nowhere, NP/IBRBYS is a taste of 2012 in the Norabelle camp and I imagine we can expect to hear more from them over the coming summer months.

Pearse McGloughlin – The Best Of IMRO Showcase 2011

25 Oct

Pearse McGloughlin performs a new short and sweet song, GOING AWAY, for the crowd at the ‘Best of IMRO showcase 2011′ in the Workmans Club.

I also had footage of Marc O’Reilly performing but unfortunately, due to forgetting my shotgun mic, the predominant sound is crowd. Grrr.

Follow the video link to watch in better quality.

Pearse remakes Emmett

21 Jul

Pearse

It has been approx 4 months since my last video post and my little baby Canon remains very much underused.

However, it has been used. A few months ago myself and Ciaran headed to the Gardens of Remembrance (where once upon a time I nearly caught the 98FM Fugitive…) with Pearse McGloughlin, his guitar and his lovely soft voice.

We managed to get a couple of takes done before being politely asked to leave by the ‘park keep’ and thankfully the mic didn’t pick up the drunk screaming French who loitered just around the corner.

A few things were learned on this shoot. In freezing weather, wear gloves or the camera will shake. Get some form of tripod. Polaroid film is expensive (the below is my last shot). Make sure there are no bugs caught between the camera lens and the adaptor. Those of you with HD screens may see a little tiny insect on your screen. Do not attempt to crush, it is part of the process now.

Here’s Pearse performing the lovely IT HURTS TO LOSE YOU by Emmett Tinley.

Here is a fantastic original work by Pearse.

And last but not least, here is the original version of ‘IT HURTS TO LOSE YOU’ by Emmett Tinley from a live show in Whelans shot by the very talented Myles O’Reilly.

The Kill Krinkle Club remake The Funeral Suits

16 Mar

Allow me to share with you a video that was shot in a very small rehearsal space last August in sunny Balbriggan, but for various reasons, has only just made it’s appearance…

Last year, an abundance of Irish music found it’s way onto my itouch. In fact it was the most that had every graced the little durable 7.2mm deep device with it’s presence. From Halves, Solar Bears, The Dying Seconds and The Kill Krinkle Club to BATS, Trails , Villagers and Norabelle, Irish acts would accompany me to and from the aul’ 9-5 and on planes, trains and automobiles around the world.

Requiring a new purpose and target for my underused, little baby Canon, I contacted some of my faves and asked them to choose a song by one of their favourite Irish acts.  Applying their own style to the song, they would then perform in front of my mic and camera.

Based on a very short series of gigs I ran about 6 years ago, I hoped to transfer the fun of the live shows to video, and at the very least to come to better grips with the dusty camera.

THE KILL KRINKLE CLUB were the first to humour me and below you will find their rendition of THE FUNERAL SUITS’ ‘WE ONLY ATTACK OURSELVES’.

Special thanks to audio guru Ciaran Mangan and the band for putting up with being cramped in a 10X5 foot shed with me and my swinging arm…

Kill Krinkle Club

KKC:

Kill Krinkle Club are Dublin based one part Swedish one part Irish electronic duo.

Justin Commins and Elina Bergman originally met by chance a few years ago in a Dublin bar. Commins had luckily won a coin toss that got him off his night job, thus allowing him to meet his future band mate. His other band at the time called it quits just as Kill Krinkle Club began to take its shape as a side project that soon, as Bergman puts it, “took over everything and everyone.”

Their debut album ABANDON was released in September 2010, a week or so after the below was shot.

Kill Krinkle Club performing ‘We Only Attack Ourselves’ by The Funeral Suits:

Here is an original work by the Kill Krinklers, ’59′ off ABANDON, by Greg Corcoran.

And last but not least, here is the original version of ‘We Only Attack Ourselves’ by The Funeral Suits  from a live show in Whelans. Both bands have headed overseas to showcase their wares at CMW and SXSW, respectively, and more of their recordings and updates on live shows can be found by venturing further into the below band links.

Halves – It goes, it goes (forever & ever). Making of montage

28 Oct

If you read any of the Irish music blogs, then chances are you already know that the debut album by the ambient electronicy gloomy maestros Halves is released tomorrow (29th October 2010) with a gig to follow on the 30th in the Workmans club.  The band began recording for the album in Canada in August 2009 bringing a small handheld camera with them and allowing me to chop of the footage from their travels abroad (and the recording in Ireland), resulting in this 6 minute montage….

I recommend buying the vinyl of this release to do the album justice! Featuring Amy Millan (stars), Philip Boughton (subplots) and many more…
